Mother of James White Hinds Dudley

     23 Sep 2007

Susannah Dudley, the mother of James White Hinds Dudley, was born 16 February 1822, in Chalgrave, Bedfordshire, England.  She was christened 24 March 1822 in the Wesleyan Chapel in Luton, Bedfordshire, England. [1]

Bedfordshire is a county in the central part of England, northwest of London.

Luton is a large town, which was also a district of Bedfordshire.  In the 1800's, hat manufacturing was its most important industry, especially straw hats.  Wheat straw was used in the straw-plaiting industry. [2]

Woburn is a small nearby town which is also a civil parish of Bedfordshire.  Woburn Abbey and St. Mary's parish church are in Woburn.

Chalgrave is a civil parish in the South Bedfordshire district of Bedfordshire, England.  Chalgrave is south of Toddington, north of Houghton Regis, and east of Hockliffe.  The church and the manor are in the eastern part of the parish.  In the 1800's, the civil parish of Chalgrave also included part of the village of Hockliffe. [3]

The father of Susannah Dudley was John Dudley, born about 1796 in Bedfordshire, and died in 1849 at about the age of 60.  His death was recorded in Woburn.

The mother of Susannah Dudley was Susanna Cook, born about 1795 in Chalgrave, Bedfordshire, and died in the first quarter of 1871 at the age of 75.   Her death was recorded in Luton. [4]

John Dudley and Susannah Cook were married 9 November 1815 in Chalgrave, Bedfordshire, England. [5]

John Dudley and his wife, Susannah, were listed in the 1841 census of District 9, Chalgrave, Bedfordshire, England, page 20.  John was listed as 45 years of age.  Susanna was listed as 40.  Her age in this census is probably not correct as Susannah is listed as 56 in the 1851 census, 66 in the 1861 census, and 75 in 1871, the year of her death.

John Dudley was "Ag Lab", an agricultural laborer.

Living with John and Susannah Dudley was  William Dudley, age 30, "Ag Lab".  This William Dudley was too old to have been a son of John and Susannah Dudley.  Perhaps he was a brother of John Dudley.

Also listed in the family were John Dudley, age 13; James Dudley, age 10, and MaryAnn Dudley, age 7, probably children of John and Susannah Dudley. [6]

No Susannah Dudley of the correct age to be the daughter of John and Susannah Dudley has been found in the 1841 census records.  However, some of the 1841 census records are so faint, they are unreadable.

However, listed on page 23 was a Sarah Dudley, age 20, living with John and Hannah Toby, ages 50 and 35.  This Sarah Dudley may have been a daughter of John and Susannah Dudley. [7]

Sarah Dudley married Thomas Deacon in Woburn, Bedfordshire, England, in the latter part of 1843. [8]  By 1851, Thomas and Sarah (Dudley) Deacon were living in Linslade, Buckinghamshire, England.  Thomas Deacon, then 31, was a coach builder's apprentice.  Sarah, age 31, was listed as having been born in Hockliffe, Bedfordshire. [9]

No marriage record has yet been found for Susannah Dudley prior to her marriage to Richard Rowell.

Susannah Dudley gave birth to a son, 2 November 1844 [10] ,in Chalgrave, Bedfordshire, England. [11] Susannah Dudley's son was listed in the 1844

4th Quarter Birth Index of England & Wales as James White Hinds Dudley.

His birth and name were registered in Woburn in Volume vi, page 113. [12]

The father of James White Hinds Dudley was reportedly James White Hinds.

Susannah Dudley married Richard Rowell 1 March 1847 in Hockliffe, Bedfordshire, England. [13]  Susannah Dudley was 25 years old and Richard Rowell was a few days shy of the age of 20 when they married.

      N. B. Susannah is listed in the England & Wales marriage index as Susannah Dudley, not as Susannah Hinds. [14]

Richard Rowell, born 4 March 1827 in Hockliffe, Bedfordshire, England, was the son of James Rowell and Ann. [15]  In 1841 James Rowell, an agricultural laborer, was a widower.  Living with him were: Richard Rowell 15; Elizabeth Rowell 14; Benjamin Rowell 12; Ruth Rowell 10; and James Rowell 7.

Susannah Dudley's father, John Dudley, died in the first quarter of 1849 at about the age of 60.  His death was recorded in Woburn. [16]

In 1851, Susannah Dudley's mother, Susannah Dudley, at the age of 56, was a widow, living in District 6, Hockliffe, Bedfordshire, England.  She was working as a charwoman.  Living with her were her sons, John Dudley 23, "Straw Plaiter" and James Dudley 20, agricultural laborer; her daughter, Mary Ann Dudley 16, and her "da in law" Ann 24, both young women "Straw Plaiters"; her "Gd.Son", Joseph (S)nead 5, Scholar; and Lodger John Lines, 25, butcher.  Susannah Dudley and her children were listed as born in Chalgrave; daughter-in-law Ann in Leighton Buzzard; and grandson Joseph (S)nead in Stanbridge. [17]

In 1861, Susannah Dudley, at the age of 66 was living in Unicorns Head, Houghton Regis Parish, Bedfordshire, in the household of widower William Scrivner, age 32, carpenter.  Susannah's relationship to William Scrivner was "Housekeeper" and her occupation was "Straw Plaiter."  No one else was listed as living in the household. [18]

Susannah Dudley, mother of Susannah Dudley, died during the first quarter of 1871 at the age of 75.  Her death was recorded in Luton. [19]

In 1851, Richard Rowell, 26, agricultural laborer, and Susannah Dudley Rowell, 29, straw plaiter, were living in District 6 of Hockliffe, Bedfordshire, England.  Living with them were his brother, James Rowell, 17, groom, and her son, James Dudley, "Lodger", 6, scholar.  Both Richard Rowell and his brother were listed as born in Hockliffe.  Susannah and her son, James Dudley, were listed as born in Chalgrave. [20]

In 1861, Richard and Susannah Rowell were still living in Hockliffe.  Richard Rowell, gardener, was 36.  Susannah Dudley Rowell, "Bonnet Sewer," was 39.  Living with them was her son, James W. H. Dudley, scholar, age 16.  This census lists all three as born in Hockliffe, which is an error, as only Richard was born in Hockliffe. [21]

Susannah Dudley Rowell's brother, John Dudley, 35, and his wife, Jane, 27, were living in District 9, Dunstable, Bedfordshire, England, in 1861.  John Dudley was a "Bonnet Stiffener."  Jane was a "Straw Hat Sewer."  Living with them were their children, Ann 9, John G. 5, Susan 2, and Walter R 5 months.  Also in their household was Rachel Day 13, "Nursemaid."  John Dudley was listed as born in Hockliffe, Jane in Woburn Sands, Agnes in Hockliffe, and John G, Susan, and Walter R Dudley in Dunstable. [22]

In 1871, John Dudley, 43, and his wife, Jane, 37, were still living in Dunstable.  Living with them were their children, Annie 18, John G 14,

Susannah 12, Mary J 8, Sarah 5, and Emma 3.  John Dudley was a draper; Jane had no occupation listed; Annie was a straw bonnet sewer; and John G a drapers porter.  The other children were scholars.  John Dudley and their daughter, Annie, were listed as born in Hockliffe; his wife, Jane, in Woburn Sands; the other children in Dunstable, all of which tallies with the 1861 census. [23]

Richard and Susannah Rowell had moved from Bedfordshire to Surrey County by 1871.  The 1871 census shows: Richard Rowell 46, "Bailiff & Farmer," Susannah Rowell 48, "Bailiff's wife," and James Rowell, "boarder," 5, "scholar", living in Perry Hill, Worpledon Civil Parish, Surrey County, England. [24]

In 1871, Susannah Dudley Rowell was 48/49 years old.  In the spring of 1871, Susannah Dudley Rowell gave birth to a girl, Susannah Florence Rowell.  Susannah Florence Rowell's birth was recorded in the 1871 2nd Quarter [April, May, June] Birth Indexes both as:

ROWELL, Susannah Florence ………..  Lambeth  vol. 1d.   page 348        and as

DUDLEY-ROWELL, Susannah F………  Lambeth  vol. 1d.   page 348       [25]

Richard and Susannah Dudley Rowell's daughter, Susannah Florence Rowell, died in infancy.  Her death was recorded in the Death Index of the

1st Quarter of 1872.  The record lists

ROWELL, Susannah Florence. 0 [years of age]…….Brentford    vol. 3a  page 32 [26]

Lambeth is a district in Surrey County in Greater London.     Brentford is a district in Middlesex County.

Another Dudley death occurred in the early 1870's which also greatly affected Susannah Dudley Rowell.  In the 4th Quarter of 1874, the death of Susannah's brother, John Dudley was recorded in Luton, Bedfordshire, volume 3b, page 293.  John Dudley died at the age of 46. [27]

In 1881, Susannah's sister-in-law, Jane Dudley, age 47, widow, was living on Union Street in Dunstable, Bedfordshire.  She was supporting herself and her children by sewing straw hats.  Living with her were her daughters, Sarah 15, Emma 13, and Phillis L 7, all three girls listed as scholars. [28]

John and Jane Dudley had another daughter, Susannah, born about 1859.

Sometime between 1871 and 1881, Susannah Dudley went to live with her aunt, Susannah Dudley Rowell and her uncle, Richard Rowell.

The census record of 1881 shows, living in District 9, Hamlet of Perry Hill, Guildford Rural Sanitary District, Worplesdon Civil Parish, Surrey County, England:

Susannah Dudley Rowell's niece, Susannah Dudley, continued to live in her aunt and uncle's home.  She married Arthur Charles Stevens in the beginning of 1887. [32]
